Feed

Another visitor to our feeders. The Cubs will refill them at tonights meeting. We plan to build some habitat piles, identify leaves and see if we can estimate the age of some of the trees in the wood tonight.

Not put off by the cold or dark the Cubs set about making log piles and habitat piles in the woods tonight. We hope that we can have a future activity seeing who has taken up residence. We filled fat/seed ball, peanut, nyger seed and mixed seed feeders and hung them back up in the tree. We contacted Saving Scottish Red Squirells to let them know about the two grey squirells that visit our feeders.

The Cubs also were set a task of finding different tree leaves in our small wood. Despite being under torch-light they managed to find sycamore, maple, hawthorn, holly, elder, cherry leaves and conifer needles. After generally guess-timating the age of the trees at about 50 years plus they measured the girth of some of the maples and sycamores and found that they were only around 15-20 years old.

Spent the day with St Josephs John Muir group talking about coppicing and the benefits it has for the animal, insect and plant life in the woods as well as all the uses for the harvested wood.
