4 of us volunteered our time and completed a Great British Beach Clean 2020 Marine Conservation Society beach litter survey. An astounding 1721 items collected over 3 hours, in only 2 bin bags over a 30 metre length of beach. The bulk of the items were plastic, with small pieces 0-2.5cm, 2.5-50cm pieces, fishing net and net pieces of 0-50cm, cotton bud sticks, bottle caps and lids predominating. We found 1 facemask and a couple of dead bird carcasses. Once you submit results to the Marine Conservation Society, they send you a very professional looking PDF document with all your data summarised and charted. I have written to the local council to share the results from the 2 beach surveys I organised and attached the PDF files.

Put a camera trap by the brook so that it takes picture if anything moves in front of it and I can see/monitor the nature activity in Cuttle Brook. W/c 21st Sept 2020

Here are some of the invertebrates we were able to find!

This test is for us to see how healthy the brook is. We carry out this test by kicking up the sediments on the streambed for 3 minutes, catching them and seeing how many underwater invertebrates there are. I did this on the day that the Cuttle Brook volunteers met up! W/c 14th Sept 2020

We took a sample of the wild life in the Lyne Water through electro- fishing with staff from the Tweed Foundation. We looked at the samples and used a key to identify seven species of fish. We also learned about the difference between salmon and trout and the importance of these fish for the local economy. The Tweed fishing is estimated to create 20 million pounds of revenue for the Borders.

We took a sample through electro fishing with the staff of the Tweed Foundation. The samples were used to look at the different species of fish in the Lyne Water. Keys helped us identify the family and species. We also learned about the importance of trout and salmon for the local economy.

A small group of us did a Marine Conservation Society beach litter survey as part of the Great British Beach Clean. We found 207 pieces of litter over 100 metre stretch of beach at Parton. Plastic items were most dominant and the word cloud illustrates proportions and types of litter collected. We enjoyed our time at the beach in the sunshine. We borrowed equipment from the council and they collected the litter for us at the end.

The took kick samples from the river and put these in trays. They used classification keys to identify the invertebrates and tally them on a sheet. The tally was then used to calculate the cleanliness of the water. Excellent water quality in Lyne Water
