7th June. A Sunday stroll to the woodlands whose top entry point is on our street. This time we went in from an entrance which leads down some steps from a housing estate to a lovely open green area. We hadn't been this way for a while and we were delighted to discover the many elder trees there in flower. I feel the timing of blackberries ripening is firmly embedded in my brain. Elderflowers seem to take me by surprise though every year! We gather blackberries, rosehips and elderberries later in the year. Elderflowers are one of nature's earlier gifts. The children loved picking and smelling them. We discovered that some of the flowers were staring to lose their petals and little white berries forming. There were plenty of full flowers left though. Later on in the walk we passed a dog walker coming the other way who said he had just seen a hedgehog run across the path! We walked the short distance to where he described having seen it.. We heard rustling but the hedgehog was not to be seen! Rosie was excited to find a tree with leaves as big as her hand. The elderflowers were duly made into cordial and enjoyed at a tea party to celebrate the 8th birthday of Willow's elephant soft toy called Ganesha.

As the river has been low, this was the ideal time to help Gran make a new monster with us and place it on a big stone in the river. Not sure how long it will last with an expected downpour on the way.
