pig wick and nature walk

The children were discovering the different plants that are in Lockerbie and the Dumfries area. Some of their favourites have been the wood sorrow, an edible plant that looks like a four leaf clover but tastes like apple peels! Pig wig looked like long grass but when stripped, inside it was thick and white and we learned how the Victorians used to dip it in pig fat and burn it as a candle.

We learned all about different tres including this one. The children learned how to tell the difference between a man made wood and a natural wood an the difference between fir, pine and coniferous trees and those trees that shed leaves in the autumn. The spotted a beautiful big Norweigian spruce tree. They learned all out the uses for the silver birch such as building canoes, as a firewood and how it retains water/ liquid.

On the Hillwalk we discovered some beautiful parts of the landscape of Lockerbie. We explored the wildlife and were careful not to disturb the sheep! We participated in the 100 steps activity too!

AS part of the nature trail the children were learning interesting facts about fungi.
