We took advantage of the beautiful weather here in Scotland to head out on our discovery walk to our local green space. Some of the children had been here before when playing and were able to lead the way…

We had to learn to ‘wedge’, this is where you use one Y shaped branch and two (or more) straight logs to make a free standing structure as the frame of your shelter. We learned that a very important part of the process is shouting “WEDGE!!” as loud as you can 📣 it really helps!

Everyone had to pitch in and help each other out to be successful in building a shelter. We learned about leadership, organisation, teamwork, compromise and problem solving. When our shelters were complete we celebrated our success and provided constructive feedback on our designs.

After we had built our shelters with just our own experience and knowledge, Kate showed us how to tie some knots that our shelters would be more sturdy and stand up to the elements. Some of us were able to tie a Bowline knot 🪢

Today, Wednesday 25th August 2021, we had our first visit from Kate our local park ranger. She brought along some locally sourced Ash logs, tarpaulin, rope and tent pegs so that we could build our own shelters. We have been reading about Barney discovering Stigs shelter in the chalk pit so it was great to have a go at building our own!

We went to visit the garden after the summer holidays and it had turned into a wildlife haven. We had lots of wild flowers, some vegetables including carrots and cabbage. There were lots of different colours of wild flowers - poppies, cornflowers, foxgloves and daisies.

Wow!!! sculptures of nature and so many herbs, flowers, trees, bushes cut into animals and Alice in wonderland, Bees and birds (falcon display) so much to see and discover most plants were labelled which helped a novice like me the girls really enjoyed the nature inspired sculptures …. 2 hours

This morning Shreya went kayaking with her daddy along the river Wey in Guildford from Dapdune Wharf. It was a lovely morning. They had the choice of either kayaking towards Guildford town centre or north towards more a rural part of the river. They noticed peoples' kayaks at the end of the gardens backing onto the river.
