Unfortunately, some of the trees at the back of the school had been blown down and some were damaged as the wooden supports had not been removed. As part of the Conserve challenge the school pupils had great fun learning about the trees, planting new beech and restoring the old birch and beech trees. Thanks to our NAC Park Ranger for joining us!

Located halfway up the hill where it isn’t quite dry but not damp either. It is very interesting as it has a stump and the fungi in the stump are covered by a fallen tree which is also decomposing. The tree, at the end with the stump, has some fungal spores growing on it and at the other end has another two species of fungi growing but I still have to identify all of these four species. The tree is also next to lots of moss meaning that the air is very clean since moss can’t grow in spaces without clean air. A picture of a nearby tree with moss is included. I believe that some of the species in this location are the same as the ones in location 2.

Located at the bottom of the hill where it is very damp and humid. There are two logs and total of four different fungal species. The two logs are have been there for quite a while because they are quite far in their stages of decomposition. The fungi have started dying from week 1 to the next as you can see in the pictures.

Hi everyone KiW Trainee Max here! Yesterday, KiW Trainee Lauren and I got to visit Camley Street Natural Park! It's a nature reserve hidden behind Kings Cross station and honestly feels like a hidden piece of paradise. It has so many habitats - wetlands, ponds, rivers, meadows, forest - it was gorgeous. We even got to see coral fungus which was really exciting.

Primary 7 reflected on their first term undertaking the John Muir award today. We used mind maps to help us jog our memories about our fantastic experiences. We linked our experiences to the John Muir goals of discovering, exploring, conserving and sharing our time in our green spaces. Primary 7 created our John Muir poster and display of our learning that we will also continue to write about. We will learn more about John Muir through winter and how our green spaces change before returning to our award again in spring. We can't wait!

Our meetings were held in our class room. Each group sat at the table and talked about the development to persuade everyone it was a good idea. The rest of the class were not impressed and objected to the heavy traffic leisure pools and shopping centres would bring. The damage to the rural environment where we live would be tremendous - wildlife, habitats, vegetation and trees would be destroyed. The general feeling was a strong NO to any development at Newlands!!

We went in groups and designed our own developments for the Newlands area. We had meetings to tell the class about them. Most of the class didn't like the idea because they thought that it would cause to much litter and pollution. Some people wanted shopping centres and other groups wanted water parks and there was also some sports centres. All of these developments would bring lots more traffic and the traffic would have to have to pass the school which would make it dangerous for the school.

Next week we are going to write to the community council and ask about putting up signs saying no littering. We are also going to put in the letter that we want to have dog poo bins so people won't throw their bags on the ground. We think there should be a sign at the entrance to the wood with instructions of how to look after the wood and keep it safe and clean for everyone to enjoy.
