1st willow warbler ID
-
We're feeling quite pleased with our detective powers today. We went for a walk round some of the paths in the village after school with the binoculars to see if we could find any of the returning swifts. We didn't find the swifts, but while we were spotting birds in one of the wooded areas we saw one of those little brown birds that I can never identify! So out came the bird ID app on the phone which has a recording of all the songs with each bird. We reckoned it was one of a handful of species, so we played their songs. We had a match! It's the 1st time I've ever been able to positively identify a willow warbler, and it was the song that did it, without which it would have just been another little brown bird! I could have never done that with just a bird book, so maybe I have to concede there are some good uses for all this modern technology. The only annoying thing is that next time we hear a willow warbler my daughter's young sponge-like brain will remember it instantly, and name the bird, whereas my worn-out brain will have forgotten the sound and I'll have to get the app out again! Oh well.
