This has been an exciting day for The 'Kelvinsiders Wild Flower Group'! We spent the afternoon with Allison Greig and her Rangers Fiona and Linzi planting Blackthorn and Dogrose at the entrance to the World Famous Glasgow Burrell Collection. We are hoping that this 'Thorny Hedge' will last through generations, providing homes for wild life and enjoyment for people from all over the world who visit The Burrell.

The first part of this activity would see our learners working indpendently on a task created by Countryside Rangers Linzi and Fiona. This was really challenging experience where learners had to decide upon the tools they would use, the materials they would have to select and also the jobs they would each take on. Some fantastic team work and collaborative learning taking place during our visit to Pollok on this day. Linzi and Fiona were never far away but gave the learners time to learn and grow at their own pace as they completed their afternoons work! 'In every walk with nature one recieves far more than he/ she seeks'....

As we mention in part one of this weeks story our days within the Wild Flower Programme are packed full of activity and often adventure. Learners within the group have shown a genuine affection for learning in this way, much of this is down to the professional and caring 'nature' of Allison Greigs Team of Rangers. As part of this visit on our Flower Power Adventure we worked with Countryside Ranger Fiona at the 'Poly Tunnel' at Pollok Park. The day was packed with activity with learners 'getting their hands dirty' re-potting a variety of Wild Flowers. Great to learn in this way from Fiona who carefully and gently showed the group how to transplant these young flowers from small Cell Trays into larger pots where the plants could take hold and grow independently. Plants weren't the only thing to taking hold during this day as learners within the group showed clear signs of independence and a love of this learning environment. Great Day...

We were to discover that the work of previous Flower Power and John Muir Groups within Glasgow Kelvin had certainly blossomed into something that would inspire us for the months ahead. During these early activities our ideas and imaginations had perhaps found it difficult to picture exactly what we were hoping to achieve in our urban green space. What we found would change our minds and allow us to see what we could become a part of. Our Adventure into Wild Learning had just begun......

We spent this day Walking, Talking, Planning and Learning with the help of Jimmy and Gavin (Allison Greigs Rangers from The North). As the sunshine streamed through the woodland we were taken on a Wild Flower Adventure learning about the abundance of seeds we already had at our disposal. Exercising our bodies and minds in the Very Best of Outdoor Classrooms we were soon to find out the rewards that our Wild Garden had to offer.....

Learners within this years Flower Power Programme have been keen to continue the GREAT WORK of previous learners and are hoping to establish a second Wild Flower Meadow at the front of our Springburn Campus. In these images learners work with Allison Greigs Rangers from the North of the City as we take our 'next steps into the Wild'!!!

Learners from previous groups have taken a redundant space within our college campus and transformed this with a Log Cabin created from reclaimed and sustainable materials complimented with a Wild Flower Meadow. We count ourselves lucky to be able to bring some of our wild flowers from the 'Flower Power' Programme which have helped to create a fantastic space for 'everyone' to learn, create and enjoy. Not much colour on show at the moment but we are sure that things will soon 'Spring' into Action!!!
