Week 3 we were joined by Graeme the local Countryside Ranger who taught us all about fire, and setting it responsibly. We linked this back to what we had learned in the Scottish outdoors Access Code about what we should and should not do.
We then went on to try and light our own fires, using cotton wool, vaseline and some dry twigs and sticks - in biscuit tins - we managed to get them lit using a Flint & Steel but they didn't take as it was a little windy. We helped Graeme light his and then Elaine brought out the marshmallows!!!!
We had great fun talking about the different things we could eat over a fire and how to do this safely.
When we were finished we learned how to properly and safely put out a fire and make sure everything was cold to touch before clearing the area again, as if there had been nothing there in the first place - causing no damage to the environment.

Week 2 we went outside the school grounds to a small wooded area nearby to discover our 'wild space'. When we were there we did a minibeast scavenger hunt as we had a good look around.

Week 1 we recapped on who John Muir was and how much he loved Nature and the environment. We also learned all about the Scottish Outdoor Access Code - which is really important to know when we are outdoors. we all have rights but responsibilities too!

The first time we all got together we learned all about John Muir and who he was and what the Family Award was all about. because of Covid 19 we are doing it a little differently with Elaine , the family learning worker working with the group every week for 7 weeks and sending home tasks and challenges for the boys to take part in alongside any other activities they choose with their families.
We had lots of great ideas for names but after a vote we chose 'Save The Trees & The Buzzy Bees'
