We wrote all the rules that we follow in the woods and made them into colourful posters to go on the wall.

We made posters with instructions explaining how to stay safe in the woods.

We have a safe walk to the woods from the back of the school playing field. Over the Summer wild flowers and sunflowers have grown along the path, and we can see butterflies and bees. The nice man who allows us to pass across his land keeps chickens, they sometimes wander about freely, but are mostly kept in a very big enclosed area to keep them safe.

We are P 5 at Newlands Primary school and we are starting our John Muir Discovery Award. Last year we did the RSPB silver challenge, and now we are looking forward to discovering our local woodlands.

3.5 miles 2.00pm - 6.00pm. We filled in another section of the map today - it's very nearly full! We had nice warmish weather (although you can feel that the weather is getting more Autumnal now) and so we took our walk through the trees and down to the river Don. There was a bit of paddling and a lot of stone skimming in the river but the grass was damp and we got surrounded by midges so we set off again! We were walking through woods a lot of the way so we saw lots of trees: Field Maple, Oak, Beech, Rowan, Goat Willow, Common Alder, Cherry, Sycamore, Ash, Holly, Horse Chestnut, Sweet Chestnut, Elder and Birch. We only saw a pigeon, some Greylag Geese (ID'd when we got home because we're only really used to seeing Canada Geese) and we heard some more meadow pippits (they seem to like being in bracken?) Our recordings suggested there were also song thrushes, robins, goldcrests and wrens (alarm call again!) around. The photo is of a plant called ragwort.

We couldn’t really see any footprints of mammals, perhaps the rain washed them away… but we certainly did find plenty of creepy crawlies!! Our tunnels were the perfect place for small insects to escape the rain and have some lunch.
